Amnesty The Garden of Hope:
The design for the garden at the Amnesty International Bookshop in Bristol was created to transform the derelict WW2 bomb site behind the shop into a place for quiet reflection. The brief was to create a low-maintenance garden attractive to wildlife, using recycled materials, on a very low budget.
The work included clearing several skips’ worth of debris from the site. We imported 3 tonnes of topsoil, and built raised beds using recycled oak railway sleepers. The plants were sourced locally through the Riverside Garden Centre, Bristol, which is a workers’ cooperative.
A dedication ceremony was held when the garden was opened to remember the prisoners of conscience around the world whom Amnesty International works to liberate.
